Listvyanka - the face of Baikal

If you don’t have a lot of time, but you want to go to Baikal from Irkutsk, the fastest option will be to go to Listvyanka settlement. At first sight, it looks like a simple village, but actually it’s an important tourist center on Baikal. It is a very popular place with one of the main Baikal ports and the most comfortable hotels. The life is pulsing through this settlement.

Listvyanka settlement is located at the source of Angara river which is the only river, flowing out of Baikal. The source is famous for being the widest in the world; its width is about 1 km.

The settlement is proudly called the gateway to a natural treasure of Lake Baikal.

You can visit many interesting places in Listvyanka: famous Limnological museum of Baikal, the arboretum, the aquarium of nerpas (Baikal seals), the observation point "Chersky Stone", the well-known Shaman stone at the source of Angara river, and one of Russia’s largest telescope to observe solar activity. From Listvyanka you can get to the ethnographic museum of Taltsy, or to the Circum-Baikal Railway.

Tour program "Listvyanka - the face of Baikal":

Day 1

Meeting at the train station or at the airport of Irkutsk in the morning (time and place are specified in the route list).

Travel from Irkutsk to the museum "Taltsy".

Visiting the ethnographic museum of Taltsy. 

The unique park-museum under the open air, where you can see a collection of architectural artefacts that were doomed to drown during the construction of numerous hydroelectric stations on the Angara River.

 Travel from the museum of Taltsy to Listvyanka village.

Accommodation at the hotel.

Visiting the aquarium of Baikal seal (Nerpinariy), received the worldwide recognition for its performance of Baikal seals. This show never ceases to amaze public with lovely seals and their abilities to dance, play the ball, draw pictures, and play musical instruments.

 Visiting the souvenir and fish market.

Meals: supper.

Day 2

Breakfast.

We are going to visit the Limnological Museum that very clearly presents all the information about the Great Lake. Exhibitions are devoted to the history of the lake, the specifics of natural landscapes, seismic environment, the animal world of Baikal and the history of its studying.

The aquarium in which tourists can study Baikal fish, crustaceans and even cute and modest nerpas (Baikal seals) is everyone’s favorite exhibition.

On the second floor you will get acquainted with the tiniest inhabitants of Baikal. With the help of electric microscopes, it is possible to study tiny crustaceans, worms, fish eggs etc. in detail.

At the end of the tour you will virtually dive into pure Baikal water. You will have an opportunity to become real researchers

Also there are cameras installed in different places aroundf Baikal, and its broadcastings you can watch in the Baikal museum. For example, you can observe lovely Baikal seals enjoying the sun on the stones of Ushkanii Islands.

The climb to the observation point "Chersky Stone" which offers a beautiful view: the entire Listvennichny (Larch) Bay, famous source of the Angara River and the legendary Shaman Stone.

 Lunch at a cafe at own expense.

To examine the solar activity we will walk to the vacuum telescope, that is the largest in Russia. Excursion to the Baikal astrophysical Observatory. The Observatory is located on the top of the mountain with a fascinating view of Baikal against Khamar-Daban mountain range.

Day 3

Breakfast.

Tour program "The Circum-Baikal Railway is a gold buckle of the Trans-Siberian Railway".

We will arrive to Irkutsk at about 8 p.m.

 Meals : breakfast, lunch.
